Honestly microsoft is just gonna send you a new one- that’s what they did when my surface cracked. Payed the $450 for ‘repairs’ and then like a week later BOOP HERE’S A NEW ONE

I figured, haha!

And honestly, this situation is just weird because me and dad did sort of rush to find a replacement.

The day it broke (which was Thursday), we immediately bought the replacement under the assumption that the thing was dead and he had it sent to me over the weekend.

What we ended up getting was a discounted surface pro 4. Again, we really thought the SP3 was a goner and that sending it to MS would take too long. And I loved the surface and didn’t want to let go ;2;

Awkwardly, I did manage to get the SP3 working again by miraculously disabling the touch screen drivers (keyboard navigation for the win!). So as a regular ol’ laptop, the thing works just fine.

So now I have two Surfaces, one in much better condition than the other, but both working.

And I seriously don’t know what to do? Do I keep the new one and sell the old one because upgrades are nice? Return the new one and keep the old one or send it to get MS-replaced because the upgrade is pointless? Dad says he’s okay with any option and I feel bad for having him spend so much ;n;

How much would repairs cost?

Microsoft wants $450 for sending the machine to them so they can “repair it.” It’ll probably take a good while, and I need that thing for school so it’s not exactly a viable option until after the semester ends. And I’m fairly certain that the cracks will only get worse and become a hazard.

Fortunately, it’s not a dire situation. I already received a replacement laptop (thanks dad), so there’s no emergency anymore. But it makes things a little complicated because now I don’t know if I’m just gonna keep the replacement and sell the SP3 or if I’m gonna return the replacement and send the SP3 for repairs.

Nyeh.

Any hope for repair?

Surfaces are a bitch to repair yourself, not to mention ridiculously expensive as those screens seem to be specially engineered. There is no way that I’ll be able to do it with confidence.

The other option is to find a tech who can do it. Or send it to Microsoft. Again, that’ll probably cost a boatload of money.

We’ll see. For now, it’ll probably be up for sale as-is and for parts.

@asksweetcream here. I set this account up for those that want to leave messages and submit things for Rusty in a place where it is central.

@technomod is on her way to Ohio and this is my small way of doing something I know I can do.

@askrustynail is currently in a coma. This account is meant to be a central location where you can submit things for him, leave messages, tag in this account and we will reblog it, etc. @technomod will read them to him and it will be here for when he wakes up so he can read these in person as well when recovering. I will take the hopeful angle at this. I don’t know the details yet, and it will be up to @technomod to share if she so chooses. This is hard for her, and Rusty’s family beyond what I can imagine. Right now, even the smallest well-wishes are valued immensely.

@technomod will be handed the password to this account when she is settled in Ohio and will be able to convey and read the messages you leave for Rusty to him.

If you have any music or audio you think he might enjoy, feel free to suggest it.

If you want to draw him something, submit it and it will be described to him.

If there are any updates, it will be up to tech to post them, of course, all with discretion for Rusty’s privacy.

In short, feel free to:

*Send messages, submit things, or tag this blog to reblog. If you’d like a message to be private (that is, with me, Tech and rusty the only ones potentially seeing it) put (private) before the entry and we will not post it.

When it comes to physical items, we have no where to place them right now but may gather them in the future for a care package. If you drew or made something  - take a picture of it and submit it for now.

Rusty and Tech appreciate your heartfelt prayers and wishes for his recovery.

Thank you all.

 Much love.

Rusty is a charming and creative son of a gun, I’ll be making a few things for him over the next few days and you should too.

This is an amazing idea and the main reason I love this community! I’m totally going to do a few things for him! ♥
