My last reference pic for my horse was made in May of 2013. Which means it’s just about time to update it to fit my current style.

Also included is some dumb family naming convention I conjured up for Post Crusade a while back. Might as well share it after the break.

The form of the name is [maternal]-[paternal]. When ponies have a foal, the foal will inherit the mother’s maternal name and the father’s paternal name. So children will have new family name made up of their parents’. This also means that mares can only pass their maternal name and stallions their paternal names.

Those who are adopted have their birth family names dropped and inherit new ones from the new parents. Of course, that can be circumvented if the parents desire so.

In the case of a single parent adoption, there is the choice of dropping both and writing up a new one to make up for one missing, or just dropping one and replacing it with the new parent’s.

What about same-sex parents? Two dads means their paternal names are passed and the order is decided by the parents. Two moms means the same, but with maternal names. The order is important, as the [maternal]-[paternal] is always retained, and fillies will only be able to pass the maternal, stallions the paternal.

So a full pony’s name will be:
[first] [optional second] [maternal]-[paternal]

An example from Post Crusade is my name for Twilight, that being Twilight Sparkle Astra-Lucia.

Apple Bloom’s is Apple Bloom Seedling-Apple. Since Apple’s a paternal name, the name can only live on through Big Macintosh.

Now for an odd case. Pinkie’s full name is Pinkamena Diane Pie-Miller. Scootaloo, who was adopted by Pinkie in the blog, has the family name of Volantis-Pie. This is a little weird because under the rules, it should be Pie-Vento. But in PC, Pinkie’s not her legal mother, just a guardian. And there are no rules about this situation. So Pinkie dropped Vento to preserve Scootaloo’s birth maternal name and passing rights and Pie replaced it.

So yeah. Bleh.
