One strange idea I’ve been developing in-house is the idea of “whitespace,” a medium that separates universes (or ask blogs, rather). Whitespace is a place that permeates the multiverse and provides access to other alternate worlds. It is my explanation for how asks appear in Diaries and PC, how crossovers happen, and also the entire point of a portal in PC.
A universe is represented by a door of relevant design, a name tag that is basically the URL of the blog, and a status light. Light on means the universe is accessable and active. Light flashing means it’s unaccessible or inactive. Light off means that it is dead.
There are also other spaces that describe lost ideas that were scrapped or forgotten (red), blogs that have been wiped with no trace (black), brainstorming and planning ideas (grey), and the non-canon stuff that happens in private conversations like roleplaying (blue).

carrotquill said: my idea for this was like a nega space, where between dimensions there was physical space, it’s like a box that holds every box in existence, and it does that by having an entrance to itself inside every AU. I also thought up a giant eldritch horror that was feeding off the possible deaths of quill, before I nulled that story idea entirely in favour of something less extreme
